On Monday, Amanda Knox pleaded for her life in a court in Perugia, Italy while awaiting the verdict of the appeal after four years behind bars.

“I’m paying with my life for the things I did not,” said Knox.

It was in September 2007 that the 20-year-old native of Seattle travels to Perugia, Italy – a city with a reputation for welcoming foreigners. Just two months later, the body of 21-year-old Kercher was found behind a locked door in the common house of the couple. Kercher throat was cut.

Images taken outside the murder scene Knox and her then boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were used to define and condemn Americans as “knoxy fox”, a ruthless murderer with the face of an angel.

During 50 hours of interrogation, which lasted four days and included a session that lasted all night with 36 officers, Knox was involved, signed a statement saying he was at home when her boss, bar owner Patrick Lumumba local , killed Kercher.

Knox, Sollecito and Lumumba were arrested.

Controversial prosecutor Giuliano Mignini (which are known to have penchant for sensationalism and many claim to use the case of Knox failed to redeem the “Monster of Florence” case) the theory that Kercher had participated in a satanic ritual sex orgy.

Claims are vaguely reminiscent of her theories on the “Monster of Florence” case and drove in Kercher murder in the realms of the Italian and British tabloids.

The press, eager to put the latest news, unearthed damning photographs of Knox and Sollecito and twisted Internet MySpace Knox’s nickname, “Foxy Knoxy,” as proof of their promiscuity.

After Lumumba was found to have a perfect alibi, an international manhunt led to the arrest of Rudy Guede. DNA fingerprints and Guede were found in Kercher’s room and was tried and convicted of murder in 2008.

In a bizarre twist, Knox was voted Woman of the Year by the Italian television on the eve of her trial in January 2009. The trial became a global phenomenon and the Knox room pranks were often a hot topic. Knox was seen smiling in the hall and the Valentine’s Day, wearing a “All You Need is Love” T-shirt.

The prosecution presented DNA evidence (which has since been in dispute), which they found Knox was the murderer. She and Sollecito were convicted of murder and Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison.

During her appeal trial, which began in the summer of 2011, a group of scientists appointed by the court found that the DNA used to convict Knox was not reliable. Key witnesses, including a heroin addict homeless, were discredited.

Knox is expected to learn her fate on Monday. The Kerchers arrived at a hotel in Perugia is expected to be in court on the verdict.

If released, it is unclear how Knox is taken out of Italy, but probably will remain a closely guarded secret.
