Alcee Hastings

June 22, 2011 by staff

Alcee HastingsAlcee Hastings, In March, Congressman Alcee Hastings (D-FL) was sued for sexual harassment by the wonder called Winsome Packer, a staff member of the U.S. Commission for Security and Cooperation in Europe, chaired by Hastings. Hastings and Packer are black, it should not matter, but it does.

Not only Packer Hastings allegedly being “unwanted sexual advances” and “inappropriate touching” in the course of two years, but she says that he and his chief of staff, Fred Turner, retaliated against for reporting the incident. Among other things, Packer says he was threatened with dismissal, Hastings pressured to buy “personal gifts, and make a contribution to the campaign for him.”

Some of her positions sound as can be easily verified. For example, says Hastings asked in public, what kind of underwear he wore. There should be some way to confirm that, if not already done so. I can think of no legitimate reason why a congressman would ask an employee about her underwear in public. Just do not pass the “Test Weiner.”

The demand has led to an investigation by the Office of Congressional Ethics. The representative Hastings denies all charges. “I have never sexually harassed anyone,” he said in a statement quoted in the political. “In fact, I am insulted that these absurd accusations being made against me. When all the facts are known in this case, the prevailing sentiment is:” How strange! ”

This is a strong negation, because Hastings is a reliable source. Oh, wait a minute, that’s wrong. He has been impeached. He was a U.S. District judge appointed by Jimmy Carter, but was removed from office in 1989 on eight counts of bribery and perjury after being caught in an FBI operation. Tragically, only a few years before Bill Clinton established that perjury is not a major crime for Democrats.

Hastings recovered after winning an acquittal in a criminal trial, and was elected to the House in 1992. Believe it or not, Democrats seriously considered putting him in charge of the Intelligence Committee of the House after he won control in 2006. Congressional Black Caucus pushed for, despite one of the impeachment articles passed by the House but rejected in the Senate, accused him of using confidential FBI information to warn a friend out of an investigation.

Hastings is confident he will prevail against the accusations of Packer: “I will win this lawsuit. That is a certainty. In a career with a lie, truth always wins. And when the truth comes to light and personal agendas of my accusers are exposed, to be vindicated. ”

What kind of “personal agenda” is supposedly Packer port? Well, she’s an attractive woman black Republican. That will make all the sensors focus on the Democratic Party. Combined with his comfortable perch in a safety seat in a district that elected him after he was impeached for corruption, which provides a fairly thick insulation Hastings consequences.

Then there is the question of a personal agenda, which becomes the title of a novel written by Packer. Quoting from a literature review of Jamaica (Packer is of Jamaican origin), The Guardian described the book as “inspired by her own experiences,” and says it “seeks to lead her readers through the examination of racial tensions, corruption and sexual harassment in Congress, and the impact of immigration to the U.S. and other nations. “There is no doubt that Packer is charged with making these allegations to spice up her book sales.

Judicial Watch, filed a lawsuit on behalf of Winsome Packer, however, think that you have the goods on Congresswoman slippery. “The accusations against Alcee Hastings as detailed in this complaint is outrageous,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “Congress is gone so far that its members think they can get away with the base of most sexual harassment of staff?”

Well, obviously used to be so far gone, Mr. Fitton. Things could be different in the post-Weiner. We’ll see.

Hastings is a very noisy defendant, a habit of shouting that all charges against him are motivated by politics. He will not even accept censorship of the wrist slap, much less go quietly goodnight Weiner. There must be some headlines this case, and probably not the kind of headlines Nancy Pelosi likes to read.
