Adele 21 12 Million

February 12, 2012 by staff

Adele 21 12 Million, By nearly every measure — radio airplay, album sales or chart position — Adele’s sophomore album, 21, dominated the previous 12 months in a way no one else even approached.

Widely credited with appealing to a broad swath of the population and helping kick-start a faltering music industry ( 21 has moved, as of last month, 17 million copies worldwide), expect the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to reward her with Grammy gold Sunday, a glittering cap to an incredibly successful year.

Although the 23-year-old Adele is heavily favored to take home nearly every one of the six Grammys for which she’s nominated — if she sweeps the top categories, she’d be the first act to do so since the Dixie Ch**ks in 2007 — the Grammys have a penchant for unpredictability. However, as I note below, I think she’s only facing one serious challenge, and even that isn’t a genuine threat.

Instead, the world will watch as a new icon is minted, a queen is crowned, and one of pop music’s brightest lights takes her place on top of the world.
