“I hope that each of us finds a way to serve our fellow citizens,” President Obama said at a news conference today. “Not only to reaffirm our deepest values as Americans, but to rekindle the spirit of unity and common purpose that we feel in the days that followed that September morning.”
The president and first lady Michelle Obama will attend the ceremonies at the sites of two of the 9 / 11 attacks. Obama will be at the Pentagon, while Mrs. Obama will be in the Pennsylvania field where one of the hijacked planes crashed.
Mrs. Obama will also help to arrange a senior community center in McLean, Virginia, issued a statement celebrating the National Day of Service and Remembrance.
“Whether you help clean up a local park, participating in a food drive or helping at a local soup kitchen or the school, volunteering strengthens our communities and our country,” said Mrs. Obama. “The National Day of Service provides an opportunity to take time to make a difference in your area and make a commitment to serve their community throughout the year”
The vice president and his wife Jill Biden, meanwhile, will attend a ceremony for 9 / 11 in New York where the World Trade Center towers once stood.
In his press conference, Obama said Saturday “we will commemorate not only the pain of September 11 but also the enduring values and strong spirit of America.”
“Both Michelle and I will meet with our fellow citizens in the memory of those lost that day and pay tribute to all those who showed extraordinary heroism in the midst of tragedy,” the president said.
