6,060 Year Sentence, The Commission for Historical Clarification (CEH) documented 669 massacres during Guatemala’s conflict thirty-sixth year. The CEH 626 mass killings attributed to the populations in distress with the state.
And as we know from the Dos Erres case is not only the number of people killed.
“The CEH has noted the particularly serious for many cruel acts committed by State agents, especially members of the army in operations against Mayan communities. The counterinsurgency strategy not only led to violations of basic human rights, but also to the fact that these crimes were committed with particular cruelty, massacres of their archetypal form. In most of the massacres evidence of multiple acts of ferocity that preceded, accompanied or followed the death of the victims…. [These] atrocious acts, not just an act of extreme cruelty against the victims, but also morally degraded the perpetrators and those who inspired, ordered or tolerated these actions. ” (The full report can be found here.)
There is still a need to go after the masterminds of the slaughter, not just those who carried out the orders.
