300 Acres Marijuana

300 Acres Marijuana, The Mexican army has uncovered the largest ever marijuana plantation. The patch covers 300 hectares, surrounded by cactus in the desert about 200 miles south of San Diego. The plants were being attended by dozens of men.
According to Gen. Alfonso Duarte, cultivation has produced about 120 tons and a value of 160 million. “This is the largest plantation of marijuana found in the country,” said Duarte.
Duarte said that the plants will be destroyed, and most of the men guarding the crop escaped capture. Six suspects were arrested at a military checkpoint.
Marijuana farmers had dug a well in the sterile area and the water is pumped through hoses to water the plants, which were up to 8 feet tall.
Army officials said the large farm just 1-½ miles of federal highway in Baja California appears to be the work of the Sinaloa cartel. The same band was linked to the biggest drop in Mexico of marijuana packaged for sale last fall and sophisticated underground border tunnels discovered in November, both also in Baja California.
Two of the detainees said they were farmers of the state of Sinaloa, home to the Sinaloa cartel led by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, Mexico’s most wanted fugitive. The farm was in the remote territory of the peninsula of Baja California, 280 miles south of Tijuana, which is believed to be controlled by the Guzman cartel.
“There are indications that these are areas of the Sinaloa cartel,” said the commander of Infantry Rafael Bernardo Sanchez, spokesman for the army’s second region, spanning the border states of Baja California and Sonora.
President Felipe Calderon has deployed tens of thousands of soldiers to the streets in their war against the Mexican drug cartels. Calderon has made it his mission to free the nations of powerful drug traffickers since taking office in late 2006.
Violence has soared since then, with more than 40,000 people died across the country. The killings have damaged the support of conservative Calderon’s National Action Party, or PAN, who faces an uphill struggle to secure re-election next July.
Mexico is the leading provider of U.S. marijuana. In addition, most of the cocaine consumed in the United States comes through Mexico.
