2012 Olympics2012 Olympics, The 2012 London Olympics has become unaware of its first iconic image after announcing a design of the Olympic torch, which resembles a huge cheesegrater Wednesday. The torch of gold color aluminum mesh looks like the useful kitchen implement due to the presence of 8,000 holes supposed to represent each person who will carry the torch relay. Ignoring unwanted comparisons, the designers said that its triangular shape symbolizes the three times that London has hosted the Games in 1908, 1948 and 2012, the motto Faster, higher stronger the Olympic movement and sport, education and cultural vision of the 2012 triple Games.

After the flame lit by sunlight in Ancient Olympia, the torch relay will start in May in Land’s End, the furthest point southwest of the country and travel to the islands of the northern Outer Hebrides of Scotland before ending with the symbolic power of the boiler in a yet-to-be-revealed in the Olympic Park on July 27.

The organizers want half of the 8,000 relay runners in the torch to be between 12 and 24 and the other half consists of people who have inspired others and made a contribution to their local community. The public can nominate people for the role.

A promise that the torch would be free of carbon did not materialize and instead will burn a mixture of traditional gas.

“We were very close, just did not come,” said Head Games Seb Coe.
