Toyota has a lot riding on this release after the double ring of questions about the reliability and the catastrophe of the earthquake / tsunami that slammed the auto industry in Japan.
This introduction was important enough that the CEO, Akio Toyoda, Toyota was in Georgetown, KY, plants for the event. That plant, which has built more than 6.7 million Camrys the last 25 years, is the construction of the new version.
The Camry has been the country’s best-selling car in 13 of the last 14 years and Toyota consistently promoted the fact that 90 percent of the Camry is sold in the last 15 years are still on the road. That’s a huge base of ownership, the company is hoping will keep up the Camry midsize segment. The newly launched Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima have been well received, the rival Ford Fusion is a consistent and comprehensive, and new versions of the Chevrolet Malibu, Accord, Nissan Maxima and is expected to hit the market next year.
The new Camry is scheduled to hit cinemas on 3 October with a campaign of heavy advertising from October 17 until the Super Bowl. Expect to hear a lot about the Camry Hybrid does the magic of 40 miles per gallon level.
Toyota offers the Camry four trim levels: L, LE, XLE and SE. Prices start from 22,500 and 24,725 and for the LE and XLE. Toyota Vice President Bob Carter said the Camry is the first unit in a parade of 12 products launches within a year. The Tacoma pickup truck, the V Prius, Yaris and Scion Tc are about to come.
At first glance, the new Camry looks much like its predecessor, only slightly lower and wider, with a skirt of aerodynamics at the front that wraps the sides as the treatment increased rocker panel. From the front of the Camry seems to have a flat (and flattering) front grille treatment.
The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder (178 hp) and 3.5-liter V-6 (268 horsepower) has been adjusted. The four estimated at 25-mpg city and 35 highways. Newest to the Camry was not so evident in the webcast. That would be the new interior design and the hybrid version.
Toyota says that while the Camry’s exterior dimensions remain the same, its engineers have removed the extra space in the interior, which has a new look and luxury (much needed).
Hybrid 2012 (available on LE and XLE trim) has a new version of industry-leading Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive, which will feature a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a 30 percent increase in the economy fuel to 43 city and 39 highway. Carter said Toyota has lowered the price of hybrids and LE for 1150 to 25,900 y.
Toyota is addressing the issue of connectivity to the multimedia Entune system, which includes drivers for smartphones to access the navigation, entertainment and information services, while supporting mobile applications such as Bing, OpenTable, and MovieTickets. Com. Toyota also claims that its voice recognition will be “best in class.”
While Toyota’s reputation is built on safety, reliability, and being the “responsible” for the election, but has been described as vanilla. Those looking for a sporty Camry SE can choose which features a specially tuned suspension and improved seats.
The company also seeks to capitalize on the success of NASCAR racing in the last five years, including more than 100 wins, three manufacturers titles and the championship lead. The new Camry will be the pace car for NASCAR next February’s season-opening Daytona 500.
