2011 Heisman Winner

December 9, 2011 by staff

2011 Heisman Winner, On Saturday, the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner will be announced in New York City. This is shaping up to be one of the closest, if not the closest, race in Heisman history.

There is an incredible array of talent in the race. Among them, Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, the son of WVU A. D. Oliver Luck, Alabama running back Trent Richardson, Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin, Wisconsin Montee Ball and LSU defensive back and return specialist Tyrann Mathieu.

There are some local ties here. WVU fans saw Mathieu up close and personal in Morgantown on Sept. 24 in the Tigers four touchdown win. If RGIII comes back to Baylor next season, he could play a Big 12 game in Morgantown. That would make for a nice attraction.

But, if WVU fans have a hometown favorite in the Heisman voting, it would be Andrew Luck of Stanford. We take family and relationships very seriously in this state. It is part of what makes us special. Also, the fans here love Oliver Luck. They loved him as a Mountaineeer quarterback and they trust him as the WVU Athletic Director. So even though young Andrew grew up in Texas and plays ball on the west coast, the fans here look at him as one of their own. He is “one of us.”
