2008 Maserati, When the news of the first weekend Grosses for Scott Pilgrim vs the world – and 10.5 million (U.S.), good for fifth place in ticket sales – Internet buzzed with speculation about why the film did not win more.
Director Edgar Wright even led to his Twitter account on Monday to counter the idea that the raw film was a disappointment.
“For the record, I am very very happy to have a Top 5 movies and a Top 5 albums in the U.S.,” wrote Wright. “I never had either before.”
The movie box office take could have seemed more underwhelming given the overwhelming amount of online discussion devoted to Scott Pilgrim, an adaptation of the graphic novel that casts Canadian Michael Cera as a slacker who must fight his new girlfriend to the seven evil ex-boyfriends.
The film was also well received among critics, who gave Scott Pilgrim average score of 81 percent, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
On Monday, Scott Pilgrim turned to Twitter to the list of topics trend, although many users were speculating about why the film did not perform better at the box office.
Bloggers and online news media were also left to speculate about why the film – shot and set in Toronto – not offered much of an immediate return for his presentation and 60 million budget.
Toronto Life magazine offers a list of reasons why the crowds could have stayed away – including the suggestion that neither Canadians nor Americans want to see a film set in Toronto – while popular entertainment website HitFix blamed the release date , marketing confusing and rapidly declining profitability prospects at the box office Wax.
The Los Angeles Times, meanwhile, called the weekend to take “unfortunate” and suggested that the 22-year-old could Cera “still (be) far from being a movie star.”
But the movie – facing tough competition in its first weekend since the number one grosser The Expendables and Julia Roberts vehicle Eat Pray Love – still have hope.
According Cinemascore, the film received an average score of A-less viewers, so word of mouth can help the film.

Mel Gibson was not injured after crashing his sports car on a hillside in Malibu, California, the California Highway Patrol said.
Gibson, 54, was alone in his Maserati 2008 when he went off Malibu Canyon Road to the south on Sunday afternoon. Gibson’s spokesman, Alan Nierob, said in an e-mail the actor-director was doing well.
Gibson cooperated with police and was collected from the scene by a friend. Authorities do not suspect alcohol was involved, but the CHP did not release details.
It’s been a rough couple of months for Gibson, who is locked in a bitter custody dispute over her infant daughter with Russian singer Oksana Grigorieva.
